Back Page: Social Claire - Stamp out the stigma of Aids

1 min read
Claire uses her experience at an HIV/Aids service to educate others.

Years ago I was a volunteer with an HIV/Aids service. As well as runninga helpline I was a "buddy", which meant befriending someone affected byHIV.

It involved everything from helping a man with Aids with home care, toworking with a young mum whose partner had recently died. When I firstmet her she was skeletal, still grieving and struggling to cope. Thiswas compounded by a nightmare story.

When she had become pregnant three years earlier and went to the doctorfor a check up she saw the letters HIV written at the top of her file -this was despite the fact that she had tested negative. Medicalprofessionals made her feel like Typhoid Mary (her words) and thedelivery of her baby was a nightmare.
