The furore over Britney Spears reminds Claire of her own hair experience.

I was giving a presentation about factors that influence young people'ssexual decision-making. I found an old slide about the power of themedia, which referred to Britney Spears in her "look but don't touch"days. I was going to ditch it as passe but, following the recent furoreover her mental wellbeing, I decided to use it.

I have always been intrigued by the virgin, mother, wife and fallenwoman roles that have been part of her media persona, and how they haveaffected her influence on children and young people.

At the moment, I'm really interested in the notion of her as BonkersBritney, following her head shave. A few years ago, I decided to have mylong locks lopped off. I had the whole lot shorn to half an inch allover. I had freedom, and no more bad hair days; it was all gone anduniformly spiky.
