Back Page: My Week - Facing up to gun crime on the home front

1 min read
Monday I meet with colleagues supporting the extended schools programme.

We compare notes regularly as children's centres and extended schools are closely linked.

They show me the hot spots for gun and knife crime as they are going to pilot some school-based solutions. I notice my student son plans to live in one of these hot spots. He told me it was "edgy". I thought this meant vibrant and lively.

Tuesday My son says his tenancy agreement is not yet tied up. He asks if he can stay home a week longer. I curse his lack of foresight and project planning - he would never deliver a children's centre on time.

Then I think about the guns and knives. Heexplains about the gangs. I realise how hard it is to understand what is happening in these communities.
