Leadership elections are all the rage. The Conservatives have just had one. And the Liberal Democrats are in the middle of theirs. So it is perfect timing for Southend Youth Council to conclude its search for a new leader later this month.

Each year, youth council members elect a new youth mayor and deputy to take them forward. But don't assume this leadership contest is any less ruthless than those of the national political parties. As soon as it was announced that the election was in February, the difference in atmosphere was clear. An otherwise informal and inclusive youth council started to divide into different camps.
