Who would have thought it? Forget about all those complicated community mapping activities you read about. It seems that if you really want to get into local communities, all you need to do is hold a pavement sale.
A few weeks ago I spent the day at a new shop we've just started leasing. It's in a great location, right in the middle of one of our more disadvantaged neighbourhoods. We're planning to turn it into a much-needed centre for young people. And ahead of the reopening it needed a good clear out and a lick of paint.
But instead of binning all the unwanted items left behind by the previous tenants, we thought we would try something new and have a pavement sale. Anything half decent went on to the pavement outside, along with a youth worker to help out the customers and, of course, to haggle over the prices.
