I have to admit that when the members of our youth council agreed to send a letter inviting a representative from each of the political parties along to their next meeting I didn't think many would turn up, especially as the meeting was scheduled to take place on the day before the general election.

I had assumed that, as very few members of our youth council are old enough to actually cast a vote, the candidates would choose to spend the last few hours of campaigning knocking on doors or handing out leaflets.

But I should have been more positive. At 6pm, just 13 hours before the polls opened, six prospective parliamentary candidates appeared and took the time to speak to the youth council about a range of issues from student top-up fees to antisocial behaviour.
