I am not a football fan. I don't support a football team. I've never even been along to a football match. I'm sure it's a great game. I'm just not into it.

This generally doesn't present too much of a problem. I've long since learned how to change the subject at the first mention of a metatarsal. But the past few weeks have been a bit more difficult. Not only have I had to manoeuvre around the World Cup, I've also had to make my first ever visit to Roots Hall, the home of Southend United Football Club.

As you can imagine, I wasn't there for the action on the pitch. I was invited along to a meeting to hear how the club's education programme was going. Like many other clubs up and down the country, Southend United has an active education and outreach programme. This meeting was an opportunity to find out how the programme was enabling local young people to take an active role in delivery of the club's various community projects.
