One of the more surreal things I've heard in a long time is the news that one of our local youth centres has been named as outstanding in a borough-wide food safety survey, the results of which have have just been published.

The results were compiled from more than 1,500 inspections made by environmental health officers over the past couple of years. I was astonished to read in the local paper that one of our slightly battered, 1960s-built centres is among just 47 venues to have achieved top marks in the newly released survey. That's better than Starbucks, Pizza Hut and McDonald's managed to achieve, not to mention the hundreds of pubs, cafes and expensive restaurants that have been given the once-over by inspectors.
