Our columnist feels the heat as the best-laid plans go into meltdown.

Here we go again, so hold on to your hats, bite your tongue and smile. Whatever the task is, it's never straightforward - that's much too easy - and I'm not actually sure we would know what to do if everything were to run smoothly.

Take the other day, for instance. What could be simpler than arranging a child protection case conference?Agree a date, prepare your invitation list and whisk it off to the clerk. Simple. That's taken care of, so on to the next task. Whizz around to see the relevant people involved, make a million phone calls, (well, maybe only 999,999), make some sort of sense of the information and then write the report. Sorted. All on track at the moment.
