Back Page: Hindsight - Kids' workers need love as well

Our columnist says it's time for employers to practice what they preach.

I worked for many years in the public health sector. Our task was to promote health across a range of settings and regularly included evening and weekend work. However, managers used to get very twitchy when staff had time off sick, and I remember a colleague scoffing: "Great eh? So busy looking after everyone else's health that they don't have time to look after their staff!" I remember reflecting on those words - a lot of our work was to do with mental health and quite often the main cause of time off work was stress. Ironic really, we weren't practicing what we preached.
