A couple of years ago I was working in a big, predominantly White, middle-class city. The work itself, however, was with young homeless people, young people in care, young people from Black and minority ethnic communities, young people at risk of sexual exploitation and young lesbian, gay and bisexual people. Even reading this back seems to put the people involved in boxes but I was working with them because they were young people, full stop.
There seems to be a perceived mystery about working effectively with any young person who has particular needs. "Oooh, I couldn't do that - you must be so strong." How many times have I heard experienced, seasoned workers say that?
