The debt crisis engulfing the NHS is starting to have a knock-on effect on the Every Child Matters programme, with the need for primary care trusts to make cuts hindering work to integrate children's services. Asha Goveas and David Singleton report.

Children's trusts are in danger of being the next casualty of the NHScash crisis.

Being healthy is an integral part of the Government's Every ChildMatters agenda, as directors of children's services are well aware.Local authorities and children's health leads have worked hard to ensurethat children's physical and mental health is at the heart of efforts togive children the best start in life.

However, the children's agenda is traditionally viewed as less of apriority by the health service. So as health trusts focus on their ownfinancial crises, children's trusts are increasingly concerned thathard-won progress on Every Child Matters will be stopped in itstracks.
