ANALYSIS: Child Protection - How to bring paediatricians on side

Doctors working in child protection walk a tightrope when dealing with potential child abuse cases. Although mistakes can be made, the right training could boost paediatricians' confidence in this controversial area. Jennifer Taylor reports.

Paediatricians are having to deal with unprecedented scrutiny. The media coverage of the Angela Cannings case, and the child death reviews resulting from the discrediting of Professor Sir Roy Meadow's theory, have increased fears of litigation and are turning many paediatricians away from child protection work (News, 11 February).

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health estimates up to 30 per cent of designated doctor and named doctor posts within child protection are unfilled.

"It's the paediatrician who gets nailed," says a former child doctor in the north of England. When he was responsible for the paediatric component of child protection in a health district, complaints were a regular occurrence.
