Moves to ensure child protection is a mandatory part of paediatricians'training could not have come at a more apt time (Children Now, 11-18January).
Though the pillorying of two of the profession's leading lights overgiving misleading evidence on cot deaths may have died down, thedamaging effect on the profession's confidence has not.
This was highlighted in an article by Professor David Hall, formerpresident of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, in theJournal of the Royal Society of Medicine this month. "Child protectionhas never been a popular area. But Roy Meadow and David Southall are thestraw that broke the camel's back," he said. And as a result, he adds,children continue to be at risk from the pressure on paediatricians to"turn a blind eye" when examining cases where signs of abuse are notobvious.
