But he said junior doctors were "shying away" from paediatric pathology.
Consultant paediatrician and child protection expert Professor David Southall was found guilty last week of serious professional misconduct by the General Medical Council for accusing a father of killing his two babies on the basis of a television programme. He was banned from child protection work for three years.
