Child protection: Paediatricians to shadow judges before becoming key witnesses

1 min read
Paediatricians will be able to shadow judges and barristers working in family law under a new regional support scheme being set up to attract more expert witnesses into child protection in the wake of the Angela Cannings case.

The Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health is leading the initiative with Lord Justice Thorpe and has managed to secure the services of a judge in each region of England and Wales to take paediatricians under their wing.

Paediatricians will be able to undertake mini-pupillages in family law.

This has been available in recent years but has been used very little, according to Professor Sir Alan Craft, president of the Royal College.

Judges will also lead local seminars to give paediatricians more information on legal processes.

The regional networks would give paediatricians a "feel of what the legal system is about, give them more confidence, and make them more likely to do child protection work," he said.
