Health News: Complaints - Paediatricians need better protection

The Royal College of Paediatricians must do more to protect doctors from child protection complaints, a report from its own members has said.

The report, which surveyed 72 paediatricians, found complaints oftenresulted from the ambiguity of physical signs and differences of opinionbetween doctors.

The report recommended training doctors in communicating with parents asa matter of urgency and called for a more robust approach in spreadingawareness of child protection work in the media.

Dr Patricia Hamilton, president of the college, said the organisationhad been working hard to support its members but admitted "we previouslyappeared less than supportive of colleagues and we need to correctthis".
