Health News: Paediatricians - Child protection to be part of training

1 min read
Child protection will become a mandatory part of paediatricians' training, the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health announced yesterday (10 January).

The news comes amid additional moves by the college and the NSPCC tostandardise training for both paediatricians and GPs.

Most paediatricians learn about child protection on existing courses, while - in line with Lord Laming's recommendations - all healthauthorities are obliged to provide doctors with child protectiontraining.

However, the level of training for paediatricians is "incrediblypatchy", according to Enid Hendry, NSPCC director of training andconsultancy.

"We did a survey to find out where paediatricians are receivingtraining," she explained. "There is a decent standard of training insome areas, but in others there's next to nothing. And it's beenoptional."

All paediatricians will now have to undertake a recognised course at anearly stage of their training. They will also have access to the firstnationally available course on child protection, launched by the collegeand the NSPCC.
