Health News: Mental health training - Colleges draw up training framework

1 min read
Blueprints are being drawn up for specialist training in child mental health for GPs and paediatricians, and the first standardised nationwide training programme could be introduced during the next 12 months. The news has been welcomed by healthcare professionals as a significant move towards helping to identify and treat cases more accurately.

Preliminary discussions have led to the creation of a model framework for GPs with a special clinical interest in child and adolescent mental health. This training is also likely to be taken by GPs who are contracted to treat residential children.

Paediatricians will be able to undertake a two-year sub-speciality course after their initial paediatric training to enable them to qualify as paediatricians with a special interest in child mental health.

Paediatricians who have already qualified will also be able to access the training.

Dr Clare Gerada, lead for developing frameworks at the Royal College of General Practitioners, said this framework was at a very early stage.
