Health News: Scotland - Child mental health training to start

Professionals who work with looked-after children across Scotland will have access to systematic mental health training under plans to be extended to the entire children's workforce.

The training programme, commissioned to start in February, delivered by mental health charity YoungMinds, should reach all 32 local authorities through regional training events. Local support will also be available to areas that make specific requests.

Graham Bryce, child and adolescent psychiatrist at Yorkhill Hospital in Glasgow, and chair of the Scottish Executive's children and adolescent mental health workforce group, said it was the first systematic attempt to provide training for those working with looked-after children.

"There are a large number of people involved in providing care for looked-after children, and there is still quite a way to go before all of them are trained.
