1 min read
The Government plans to water down proposed laws that would ban children from being placed on adult mental health wards, Children Now can reveal.

Last week, campaigners were jubilant after the House of Lords added themeasure to the Mental Health Bill.

Kathryn Pugh, project manager for YoungMinds, said: "This is verysignificant as it includes children voluntarily seeking care, not justthose under compulsion. The Lords have recognised if the right care isnot given early on, young people can disengage from services."

If the amendment becomes law, mental health services will have to assessunder-18s and provide care in a child or adolescent ward if adultprovision is deemed unsuitable.

However, Children Now has learned that the Government plans to scupperthe measure when it is debated by MPs in the House of Commons.
