Health News: Mental health - MPs support ban on adult wards

Labour MPs, including former Home Secretary David Blunkett, have thrown their weight behind proposed laws to ban children from adult mental health wards.

The support for a ban during last week's second reading of the MentalHealth Bill in the House of Commons has raised campaigners' hopes thatit will become law.

Speaking in the Commons, health secretary Patricia Hewitt said: "We needto focus on continuing to improve services rather than believing changesto the law will solve the problem."

But Kathryn Pugh, project manager for YoungMinds, said although strongpolicies were in place they had yet to make an impact. She said: "If thepolicies were working we wouldn't be trying to change the law."
