Health News: Mental health - Fears over plans in Queen's Speech

Children and young people will not have their age taken into account if forced to have mental health treatment under plans announced in the Queen's Speech.

The Mental Health Bill, which campaigners fear is being rushed throughParliament, received its first reading in the House of Lords lastweek.

The Government has been trying to push through laws on how people aresectioned for eight years.

But while the previous attempt to draft legislation, scrapped in March, contained some measures on children, campaigners say the new Bill doesnot attempt to meet their needs at all.

Kathryn Pugh, project lead at YoungMinds, said: "We will be lobbyinghard to change this. It's a completely missed opportunity."

She said that as the Bill stood, assessment procedures could be carriedout by a professional without age-appropriate expertise.
