Unsurprisingly, this framework faces many challenges. But the past week has seen a couple of developments that threaten to take the shine off its success if not tackled swiftly and effectively - and both concern the role of paediatricians in child protection.
The first is the news that Lisa Arthurworrey, the social worker responsible for Victoria Climbie before she died, has announced that she will appeal against her dismissal. In an interview last week, Arthurworrey explained that, while she regrets her decisions, she "relied" on medical evidence for signs of abuse. A letter from the consultant paediatrician at North Middlesex hospital explained that the marks on Victoria's body were due to scabies and, as a result, there were no child protection issues.
