The government aims to simplify the procedure parents have to go through to make a complaint about a school.

Are parents really partners in their children's learning?

That's an aspiration in The Children's Plan, but practice can fall short. And when that happens, parents and children should have a right to complain and be able to access a fair complaints system - for parents, an area currently open for consultation.

What's wrong with the present system?

Current school complaints procedures are too drawn-out and complex. There is a legislative framework in place, but it spans provisions in several Acts. It's best to try to resolve complaints at school level as informally and quickly as possible but, in the case of an unresolved issue or a parent feeling that the school is being unreasonable, a complaint can be made to the local authority, Ofsted or the Secretary of State.
