Viewpoint - The internet is just one way to reach them

Can you remember life before the internet? For today's 16-year-olds, born in 1992, there has never been a time when it didn't exist. What's more, they have grown up with a mobile phone - and there has always been multi-channel television.

Organisations that work with young people have to reach them on their own terms. This means making the best use of the platforms that are integral to young people's lives - the internet, mobile phones and digital television - as well as face-to-face work and traditional communications methods.

Unsurprisingly, the internet is the first place young people turn to for information. Official statistics show that eight out of 10 young people aged 16 to 24 regularly use the internet. And now that an estimated 96 per cent of young people own a mobile phone - many of which offer web access - the internet is available anytime, anywhere.
