Online chat is increasingly important for children's social lives and learning development. Graham Readfearn shows why teaching them how to use the internet safely is critical.

Nadia sounds like any other 13-year-old girl - a little flirtatious with a love of fluffy animals and pop stars. But this innocent teenager in a chat room has helped more than 6,000 primary school children in London learn that, on the web, not everything is as it seems. Nadia is really a police officer on a wireless link-up who shows children how easy it is to be drawn in by paedophiles.

The Metropolitan Police's Safer Surfing training programme, which stars the likes of Nadia, is set to be rolled out to schools across the country as a result of its success in London. According to PC Bruce Muldoon, who helped develop the programme: "If you can use the natural cockiness of a child against him, the lesson can work very well."
