Website to teach internet safety

1 min read Social Care
A website enabling eight- to 11-year-olds to learn about internet safety through a "cybercafe" has been launched by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP).

The site lets children learn at their own pace, teaches them to have fun online, and encourages them to go to a trusted adult if they feel threatened while using the internet.

The children can play games with a character, Gryff, to find out how to use the internet to do homework, send emails, text and post to online forums.

The site was designed and tested by children to ensure it met their needs. It can also be used by teachers to download lesson plans and other resources or by parents to help them teach their children about internet safety.

Jim Gamble, chief executive of CEOP, said a child's naivety could lead to them being vulnerable on the internet. "We are encouraging children to sit down with adults they trust, explore the resources we have launched and to think about what they are doing."
