Theatre production to teach children internet safety

1 min read Education
More than 10,000 primary school children are to attend a theatre production designed to teach them how to stay safe online later this month, thanks to a partnership between an internet safety company and a drama school.

The production, Zak and Zara's Cyberspace Adventure, created by staff at drama school Perform, was funded by internet company Symantec as part of their Norton Family Online Safety initiative.

The futuristic themed performance, set on "Planet Disco", will cover topics including social networking sites and instant messaging and will educate children about how to handle cyber-bullying and use chat rooms safely.

Caroline Cockerill, Norton online safety advocate for Symantec, said: "Children will learn the three golden rules of staying safe on the Internet - be safe, be smart and be certain - and take home with them information that they can learn and share with their parents and carers."

Lucy Quick, principle of Perform, said: "Theatre in education is extremely powerful and can really get important messages across more than anything else as the children can really empathise with the actors and stories. Internet safety is a very important topic right now, so we are very happy to be collaborating with Symantec to tackle this subject."
