One in five 16- to 24-year-olds are out of work and many are struggling to repay debts or meet living costs. Start a discussion on how to deal with money problems during a recession.

The latest employment figures show one in five 16- to 24-year-olds are out of work and the figures are getting worse. In the three months to July, unemployment in this age group rose by 60,000 to 947,000, the biggest jump in 17 years.

Centrepoint, which supports homeless young people, is among those concerned that this tough economic climate will leave many young people vulnerable to long-term debt and poverty.

The charity points out that young people often struggle to repay debts and students owe an average of around £23,000 when they graduate. The benefits system is also skewed, so the under-25s receive lower rates than those aged over 25.
