In Practice: Ask the experts

1 min read
Extended schools are meant to engage the community and voluntary sector, what type of organisations are we talking about and why should they be involved?

There are many reasons why schools should encourage the involvement ofthird sector services.

Some of the activities may be provided by well-established nationalorganisations (such as Barnardo's, I Can, Place2be, etc) where staff mayhave more specialised training than some of the other small localorganisations and consequently be familiar with issues such as childprotection.

Some of these organisations may have their own referral processes, triedand tested over many years of experience. Coupled with goodcommunication between school staff, they can play a valuable role inensuring support of pupils with special educational needs.

Third sector services can provide specialist skills, for example insports activities, after-school clubs, and the arts. There may also be aspecialist provision for ethnic minority parents, or parents with basicskills needs.
