Hackney youngsters step up to the mark

What is going on in the picture?

Nearly 2,500 pupils from Hackney in London took part in a borough-wide competition where young people compete to beat their own personal bests for different sporting events. To get the young athletes in the mood for success, they warmed up for their events by doing the "lightening bolt", the celebration of 100m world record holder Usain Bolt.

Why was it happening?

This was the sixth annual Personal Bests, an event set up when London was awarded the Olympic Games to act as a health and wellbeing legacy project for London 2012. This year, 40 local primary schools took part and 500 young people attended the finals at Hackney Marshes in early July.
