Purpose: To give talented young athletes the chance to develop their skills

Funding: £300,000 from Nike

Background: When sports giant Nike used Hackney Council's name and logo on a new football range without permission several years ago, it led to an unexpected windfall for young athletes in the London borough. The authority was given £300,000 by Nike for infringing its copyright and that money was used to launch a Youth Sports Fund. "We could have just put the money in the council coffers," says Jonathan McShane, cabinet member for health, social care and culture. "But we thought this would be a better way to spend it."
