Youth Opportunity Fund: How we spent it in ... Hackney

Young people on Hackney's youth panel demand clear evidence that projects are going to make a difference. Tim Burke reports.

Hackney's youth panel currently has £323,800 of youth opportunity fund money and £139,200 of youth capital fund money to distribute to projects that benefit young people.

A panel of around 12 young people, all of whom have undergone training in grant making, are responsible for making the decisions.

Youth participation worker Cat Garrett says the council regularly undertakes outreach work to recruit new members, especially from projects that have received youth opportunity fund money. "We have a diverse group, including young people from ethnic minority communities and newly arrived Eastern Europeans," says Garrett. "But there's still more to be done, particularly around reaching out to those with disabilities."
