Youth Opportunity Fund: How we spent it in ... Sunderland

3 mins read Youth Work
Young people are genuinely at the heart of administering the Wearside council's youth capital fund, reports Tim Burke.

Youth projects in Sunderland were already able to apply for small grants from the local Keyfund before the arrival of the youth capital and youth opportunity funds in 2006. The Youth Matters Team administering Sunderland's youth capital fund and youth opportunity fund allocations have therefore been able to concentrate on providing money to larger projects. In 2008-09, Sunderland received £302,500 for its youth opportunity fund and £173,800 for its youth capital fund. The local authority was also one of 50 councils to receive an additional £452,000 from the Youth Capital Fund Plus allocation.

Who allocates the money? "As far as I know, Sunderland is the only authority that employs young people to administer youth opportunity and youth capital funds," says Diane Laws, Youth Matters Team co-ordinator at Sunderland City Council.
