Youth Opportunity Fund: How we spent it in ... Cornwall

3 mins read Youth Work
Young people in Cornwall set up six regional panels and three county-wide panels to handle their allocation. Tim Burke reports.

Cornwall's youth opportunity fund and youth capital fund money has been branded as Our Money Your Dream. Annual allocations amount to £256,115 for the youth opportunity fund and £221,519 for the youth capital fund. Each of the six districts were then given around £70,000 to spend.

How were the panels set up? When the funds were launched in 2006, the local Connexions, the umbrella group Young People Cornwall and the youth work team from Cornwall County Council got together to decide the best way forward.

A team of adults and young people settled on a six-panel structure to reflect the six Cornish districts of Caradon, North Cornwall, Kerrier, Carrick, Restormel and Penwith. That structure has remained throughout, with each district putting £5,000 into a pot for a county panel.
