Young people in Hertfordshire chose the name The Big Spend for their youth opportunity and capital funds. Spending is now overseen by Youth Connexions Hertfordshire, which was created in 2008 from the merger of the youth service, Connexions and the youth inclusion and support panel. In 2009/10, Hertfordshire received £596,800 for its youth opportunity fund and £516,100 for its youth capital fund.
How was the panel set up? Hertfordshire prepared for the launch of its funds by getting together representatives from youth groups and consulting on procedure and policies.
Steve Madden, youth participation worker for Youth Connexions Hertfordshire, says it was pleasing that none of the panel's original members were already involved in other participation initiatives. "There's good arguments for using those who have experience," he says. "But we were pleased to freshen things up and give opportunities to those who might not have had them before."
