Youth Opportunity Fund: How we spent it in ... Halton

3 mins read Youth Work
Young people in Halton developed their own criteria to judge applications for funding from youth groups. Tim Burke reports.

Halton is a borough in the north west of England and covers the towns of Widnes and Runcorn. In 2009/10, its Youth Bank panel will distribute a total of £190,000 in youth opportunity fund and £82,000 in youth capital fund money.

What model was adopted? After consulting its youth forum, Halton Borough Council decided that a Youth Bank would be the most appropriate vehicle for administering the new funds. Since then it has flourished with support from Halton Youth Service, Greater Merseyside Connexions and YouthBank UK. By 2009 21 young people were involved as grant givers, attending meetings at their office at Grangeway Youth Centre in Runcorn.
