Newcastle upon Tyne's youth opportunity and youth capital fund panel has been hard at work divvying up the authority's allocation of £334,792. The panel lacks a permanant base but meets regularly, sometimes weekly, at a variety of locations around the city at times to suit the young members.
The panel has developed a partnership with Keyfund, a long-established initiative that has built strong processes for encouraging hard-to-reach young people to design and run their own projects. Bids to the panel for under £2,000 have been directed towards Keyfund.
Who is on the panel? "There will be 10 of us. It's a very mixed group with people from all sections of the city," explains 18-year-old panel member Tanya Walker. Recruitment took place by advertising through the youth service, voluntary sector and schools networks and the number of panel members was expanded from six to 10 at the request of young people.
