Youth opportunity fund: How we spent it in ... Hull

Young people in Hull have been involved in developing guidance for their youth opportunity fund allocation, writes Tim Burke.

With youth work in Hull having a "floor-to-ceiling restructure" between March and August last year, arrangements for the youth opportunity fund and youth capital fund were a little late getting into full swing.

Having looked at good practice nationwide, it was agreed by Hull Children and Young People's Parliament in October 2006 to divide the local authority's £416,047 allocation between seven political wards and also create a city-wide pot. About 150 young people were involved in developing procedures and guidance, and the resulting application pack was promoted widely through local networks.

Who's on the panel? Hull took a conscious decision not to go for an "elite" group - elected or otherwise - during the first year of the fund. Instead a variety of young people were invited along to day-long sessions in a comfortable city hotel.
