Youth opportunity fund: How we spent it in ... Trafford

3 mins read Youth Work
Young people in Trafford created a fund called Pot of Gold and invested their youth capital money in one arts venue, writes Tim Burke.

It was a nine-year-old who helped Trafford panel members come up with the favoured name for their youth opportunity fund - Pot of Gold, or POG. The fund has had an annual sum of £107,647 to allocate to youth projects. A separate youth-led consultation decided to put youth capital fund allocation of £93,105 a year into the creation of a major new arts space (see case study).

Who is making the decisions? Daniel Armitt, participation manager for Trafford Council, explains that an initial group of around 10 young people were recruited. "They interviewed me for my job and we started doing teambuilding activities. We were pretty lucky with our first group and got a good mix of ethnicity, genders and young people from different parts of Trafford."
