Extended schools: Head teachers win concession on having to offer all core services

1 min read
The Government has made a major concession to head teachers in a bid to drive up support for the extended schools agenda.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes has said that schools will not beexpected to offer all of the "core services" outlined by ministers. Theywill instead be free to respond to local demand.

Hughes made the concession in an exclusive interview with ChildrenNow.

She said the Government was on track to have every school offeringextended services by 2010.

But she added: "There's no point having schools simply ticking theboxes, making sure that they provide every single thing in that coreoffer. They have to see what the priorities are for children andfamilies locally and what's already available or what other people inthe area can provide.

"The template is there in terms of the core offer. That's theaspiration. It doesn't have to be the exactly the same full offer atevery school."
