Education News: Extended schools - Portsmouth hits target yearsearly

Portsmouth City Council has been lauded for becoming the first local authority to have all of its schools offering access to extended activities.

Children's minister Beverley Hughes commended the council for hittingthe Government's 2010 target ahead of schedule. She said: "I want tocongratulate Portsmouth on leading the way with all its schoolsdelivering access to the extended schools core offer.

"We know from independent evidence and from the experience of childrenand parents taking up activities through their schools here inPortsmouth, that extended schools are crucial to the achievement, healthand happiness of children and families."

The Government wants all schools to offer access to extended services by2010, with half of primary schools and a third of secondary schoolsdoing so by 2008. But Hughes recently admitted that schools would not beexpected to meet every element of the core offer (Children Now, 31 May-6June).
