Every disabled child matters: Authorities undertake to upgradedisabled services

Five local authorities have signed up to an ambitious drive to improve services for disabled children.

The Every Disabled Child Matters charter was launched two weeks ago(Children Now, 19-25 October) on the back of research highlightingcouncils' failure to include disabled children in children and youngpeople's plans.

Local authorities who sign up to the charter pledge to deliver ninemeasures, including a key worker service, timely information and targetsfor services in local area agreements by 2008.

Steve Broach, the campaign's manager, said: "The objectives areambitious but realistic and we believe every local authority should beable to meet the objectives within the timescale."

The five authorities that have signed up are Dudley, Enfield, Halton,Hertfordshire and Kingston upon Thames.

Jane Pitman, lead member for Hertfordshire, said: "We signed up becauseit is needed, but also because it's a practical campaign - the targetsare achievable if we try hard enough."
