Half of English councils sign disabled child charter

1 min read Health
Half of all English councils with responsibility for children's services have now signed up to the Every Disabled Child Matter's Local Authority Charter.

The campaign group has confirmed that 76 out of 150 local authorities that deliver disabled children's services have signed the charter, which was first launched in 2006.

The charter commits councils to provide families with information, appoint key workers to co-ordinate services and involve disabled children and parents in service planning.

Every Disabled Child Matters is now urging supporters to lobby the remaining councils to encourage them to sign up.

Meanwhile, more than a third of Primary Care Trusts (PCT) in England have signed the campaign's PCT Charter, which contains similar commitments.

Christine Lenehan, Every Disabled Child Matters board member and director of the Council for Disabled Children, said: "It is shocking that the vast majority of families still have to fight to get the services they need. Signing our campaign charters is an ideal way for local authorities and PCTs to transparently demonstrate their commitment to families."
