What's so special about the school? Plashet School, an all-girls secondary in east London, has been identified by Ofsted as one of 12 outstanding schools that consistently excel against the odds. It is also a Science Specialist College and a Beacon School.

What are the pupils like? The school serves 1,352 girls aged between 11 and 16. More than 90 per cent of its pupils have English as their second language and more than 30 per cent are eligible for free school meals.

What makes the school successful? The school ethos is based on the principle of mutual respect. Community cohesion is a priority for staff. Many of the pupils are Muslim and some are Hindu, Sikh or Christian. The school takes questions of faith seriously and encourages debates about religion and diversity. It also highlights the importance of continuing professional development for staff.

What are exam results like? Plashet School has surpassed national and borough averages since 2000. More than 60 per cent of its pupils gained five GCSEs at grades A* to C for the past three years.
