How an initiative at a school in Newham is helping to tackle breast cancer

1 min read Education Health
The project at the borough's Plashet School has seen a marked increase in breast cancer awareness among female pupils and their mothers

Funding £33,000 from NHS Newham for one year

Purpose To save lives by increasing awareness and early detection of breast cancer

Background Cancer survival rates in the London Borough of Newham are among the lowest in the country, so East London charity Community Links developed a breast cancer awareness project at Plashet School, a secondary school for girls with a high proportion of South Asians.

The project was inspired by research from King’s College London, which found that Asian women have lower than average awareness of symptoms and screening, and are less likely to check themselves for signs of the disease.

Action The project started in Easter 2011 with the recruitment of adult volunteers to deliver classroom sessions for year 9 and 10 pupils, with the aim that they would pass on this potentially life-saving information to their mothers.
