Health News: Breast-feeding - Sure Start can help change attitudes

Sure Start workers can play a big role in improving breast-feeding rates, an expert has claimed.

Rosemary McQuarry, professional officer for practice and district nursing at the Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association, said a major barrier was the negative attitude that mothers who did not breast feed passed on to their children. She said Sure Start staff working with families with children under five could change perceptions.

The Government has set a target to increase breast-feeding rates by two per cent per year through the NHS Priorities and Planning Framework.

McQuarry made her remarks as new research claimed health professionals need an increased understanding of the social factors that prevent women from breast-feeding.
