The debate was led by Stephen Lloyd, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastbourne, and contributed to by a range of other MPs. The minister for disabled people, Maria Miller, responding on behalf of the government said: "The work that the government is doing puts support for disabled young people very high on our priority list."
There were a wide range of issues covered in the debate including transition support, employment opportunities and the impact of welfare reform on disabled young people. In her response to the debate the minister said that the government was looking at support for disabled young people in transition through the single assessment and commitment to investing in key workers announced in the green paper on SEN and disability, Support and Aspiration. Responding to MPs' concerns around employment opportunities and support for disabled young people with the loss of education maintenance allowance and Connexions, Miller said that the government is looking at this issue through the Sayce review and Sayce's recommendations on support for access to work.
