NCB Now: Breaking barriers in Westminster

1 min read
On 4 July, 60 MPs and peers joined parents, young people and representatives from the disabled children's sector at an Every Disabled Child Matters and Family Fund parliamentary reception at the House of Commons.

Hosted by Stephen Lloyd MP, the reception saw the launch of Breaking Down Barriers: Making Work Pay for Families with Disabled Children, a report that highlights the barriers families with disabled children face when entering and remaining in employment.

In her address, children's minister Sarah Teather highlighted the importance of "bringing together the many different challenges families face, to try and put together a system that's more coherent, that works round the family and looks at families' needs".

Kerry Fox, a parent from the Family Fund, then described the issues her family faced when she decided to return to employment in 2009 after being out of work for 10 years. Fox spoke of the difficulties in finding a position that offered enough flexibility for her to balance her role as an employee and as a parent carer.
